Gaza report dates: why “published today” does not mean today’s total

The first answer

Keep the reporting window beside every figure. People at risk, families needing shelter and reported casualties describe different populations.

Read the report’s clock before its headline

The OCHA report titled 15 October 2026 was published on 19 October. This is a reading guide to that fixed document, not a live battlefield update. Its default reporting window is September 29–October 12 unless an item gives a different period. A later publication date does not make all of its indicators current.

Our source card records the document title and review date separately. When comparing a later bulletin, copy the period attached to the specific indicator rather than assuming that every row follows the title date.

A flood-risk estimate is not a new casualty count

The report describes displaced people living at sites exposed to flood risk. It also discusses shelter assistance in families. The units cannot be substituted for one another. A high-risk subgroup is included within a broader medium-to-high-risk group; adding the groups creates a false total.

Our reporting template keeps six fields together: indicator, unit, geography, period, attributed authority and verification status. Leave a field unknown when the document does not disclose it. Do not infer household size to convert families into people.

What a responsible comparison can show

A useful follow-up asks whether the same indicator, location and method have changed between two reports. A change in reporting coverage can affect a total without establishing an equivalent change in conditions. We do not manufacture a daily death counter by subtracting unlike figures.

This edition contains no live tactical positions, unlicensed field images or synthetic photographs presented as evidence. Follow the original OCHA document for its attribution and limitations, and use a newer dated report before describing the current situation.
